Transition Time at Sun

Of all the Unix workstations I have ever worked with at school and work, the well-balanced ones were always the Sun workstations. Before Linux, SunOS was a “Unix reference platform” due to their marketshare and mindshare.

As of today, Scott McNealy is the ex-CEO of Sun Microsystems. The new CEO is Jonathan Schwartz who has written kind words about Mr. McNealy. Unlike Apple, Sun’s customers are businesses, and there is no room for sentimentality or reflection in corporate corridors.

Sun’s vision is the same now as it was when it was founded by four graduate students at Stanford, and it will be the same 10 to 20 years from now, because it isn’t even close to being fulfilled:

The Network Is The Computer.
