Fear and Loathing

The mother of all Mac rumors was unleashed two days ago. Thousands of users posted comments in various web forums, showing a split of Mac users between those who fear and those who welcome change.

I am of the latter camp. I believe that the essence and soul of the Mac experience is the software, not the hardware. I switched to Linux/AMD during the Apple Dark Ages of 1997-2000 and switched again for MacOS X, not a 500MHz G4.

I see two things driving this possible move to Intel. One – Apple has to get more control over what they make; they have been hurt in the past by the inability of Motorola and IBM to deliver. Two – Apple cannot live on 2% marketshare forever. It has to pick the time to make a move to get more market share, and that means moving to Intel-based systems. My previous post may have been premature – when Intel said “buy something else”, they meant buying a different OS.

There is no fear and loathing in Cupertino, Redmond, or any places where the future is being made.
