Apple Platinum Returns

Once famed for it’s adherence to interface consistency, Apple has recently begun to create different look-n-feels for their applications. Currently, MacOS X applications can use either the Aqua or Brushed Aluminum interfaces. Appleinsider reports that a third interface theme resembling either a merge of Aqua with Brushed Aluminum or a modernized version of the classic System 7 Platinum theme has been seen in developer releases of MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger).

I like it – it should make a good Aqua replacement. Some applications allow the user to decide which theme to use. Apple should allow limited skinning of applications.

  1. recently i have gone skin and theme crazy ! especially seeing some nice os X mods. i was wondering what the commercial implications of this is going to be .. but don’t worry, those marketing people are right on it. http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,61441,00.html
    what we are seeing is moving beyond skinning media players to your ENTIRE COMPUTER interface ;-{}

  2. I’d like to skin my Mac, but since Apple does not allow this via an API, programs like ShapeShifter will probably tend to break after every OS update, especially big upgrades like Tiger.
