Digital Cameras running on Internet Time

It’s been less than six months since the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2 was announced. I picked one a little over a month ago – I figured that it would be another year before they release the DiMAGE Z3 (The 4.0MP Z2 arrived a year after the 3.2MP Z1).

Wrong. Photography Blog reports that the Z3 has been released. I’m a bit miffed. Are we now down to 6-month product cycles? Given the 8MP cameras announced by the big three digital camera makers (Canon, Nikon, Olympus), this business approach by Konica Minolta is interesting – I think it may give them a competitive/marketing advantage if the market is growing rapidly.

Still, my Z2 is an excellent camera – I wanted the 10x optical zoom and it had better features and performance over the Olympus Ultra Zooms I was looking at. Once MicroCenter offered a 20% discount down to $360, the time for waiting was over.

As an aside, it seems like Apple is again thinking different from Konical Minolta and letting their products get long in the tooth.
