Vicious Panther

The user reports regarding the destruction of data in Firewire 800 drives when used with MacOS X 10.3 (Panther) systems continue to trickle in. Unless Apple, Oxford Semi, OEM manufacturers, and the retailers fix this problem soon, I can’t think of a better reason to move to USB 2.0. The next external drive I buy will probably be have both FireWire and USB 2.0 connections, and I will have to recommend the same to my friends and customers. It’s too bad Apple had to blow this opportunity to really let FireWire 800 shine under Panther; any goodwill FireWire had vis-a-vis USB 2.0 is now gone, along with any chances of being a significant player on x86 platforms.
