Goodbye SPS

As I predicted the last time, Motorola has finally decided to sell off their long-suffering Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS). Although the new company will probably do well with the PowerPC technology, I think they will take the product line towards microcontrollers and embedded processors rather than the desktop market. Let’s hope they succeed, because a buyout by either Intel or AMD (of PowerPC intellectual property) may be the result of continued failure.

Galvin has announced plans to step down, citing a difference of opinion with fellow executives on the company’s direction.

Translation – Galvin’s opinion was that he wanted to remain CEO. His fellow executives did not agree with that opinion.
