I’ve got a new toy

The salesperson looked at me funny – she figured I got the day off yesteday when I came in before lunch to buy PC parts. It took me about 6 hours from the time I got back from the store and the time I got it to boot into Gentoo Linux.

Today, I went to get a real mouse and did a few more kernel recompiles – I figured out that one should always compile the kernel in 386 mode or else your Ethernet drivers won’t work.

The rationale for why I bought a PC and the test I ran can be found here. At least I’ve got a foot warmer this winter.

That’s what a hamburger’s all about…

I’ve always known that one can order extra meat on their In-N-Out burgers. Someone actually ordered a 20×20 and ate it all. At least I now know the price – 65 cents for a beef patty and 20 cents for cheese.

Great burgers. Mickey D’s and Burger King shouldn’t even try.

Jury Duty – Time to Read!

Today was jury duty day – a chance to read books I’ve been putting off. In 15 minutes, I had read Edward Tufte’s The Cognitive Style of Powerpoint and it was like pulling out of a terminal dive. I suggest all PowerPoint jockeys read this and see how we can make our next presentations better and more information-dense. It’s $7 well-spent.

I also managed to read half of Linus Torvalds’ Just For Fun. The best quote so far is in the extended entry. There is also a chapter where he takes on Steve Jobs and his RDF.

School District computers taken down by worms

Lee Jordan clearly shows a lack of deductive reasoning – Macs are immune, but he doesn’t know what he can do to prevent future occurrences of MSBlast?

Apple Music

I guess Apple is now going to be setting aside extra room at the Apple Stores as concert venues. Found today while browsing the iTunes Music Store:

Microsoft just doesn’t get it

Here’s a good article that clearly shows why people at Microsoft really don’t get it, even the good-hearted geeks who work for them. Their viewpoint of the world is right out of Highlander (“there can only be one”). Such a world, a monoculture, would be a dreadful place to live in. I support diversity in computing.

Total Recall

August 18, 2003 at 9:15 pm | Posted in Politics | Leave a comment

Here’s some jokes related to the California recall. I’m just too sleepy to make it past 11pm most nights.

I’m not sure the state budget can be fixed easily – there are too many items out of the control of either the Governor or Legislature, and the most expensive cost of doing business here may not be state regulations, taxes, insurance, or workmen’s compensation. I think we Calfornians suffer a collective delusion in thinking that high real estate prices for commerical and residential properties will not adversely impact our competitiveness and costs vis-a-vis other states.

The scary part is that there is only one, painful way, to correct this “problem”, and that has gotten Warren Buffett into trouble this week.

One hour and 10 minutes before the MSBlaster worm attacks Microsoft. All quiet on the Macintosh front. No problem with the Linux server.
